Disneyflix a Direct Competitor to Netflix

thebottomline.as.ucsb.edu

Netflix overtakes Disney by becoming America’s most valuable media company (Oliver, Matt). However, they are fighting for market share against rivals streaming services.

Walt Disney Co. announced it wouldn’t renew a licensing contract with Netflix for some of its content, since it is going to has its own streaming service very soon which will be home for some of its popular and highly valuable content including the Star Wars and the Marvel library. According to Disney CEO Bob Iger “Fox’s entertainment assets would boost Disney’s forthcoming ‘direct-to-consumer’ (DTC) streaming service”.

Over the years, Disney was very good in making money with taking into its consideration the changes in the distribution methods; it came up with Disney Vault, then Disney Channel, and now with the Disneyflix.

Disney owns Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, 20th century Fox Film, and many others, in another words, it has a massive content library of movies and shows, that will be supplied to its own streaming service, while taking them off Netflix. Moreover, Disney announces it will produce original, platform-exclusive content:

The competition is real, that is why Netflix has increased its spending on original content. According to chief content officer Ted Sarandos “around 85% of new spending going to original TV shows, films and other productions” (Spangler, Todd).

Also, it is trying to collaborate with popular politicians and media figures; recently it made a deal, with Hollywood director JJ Abrams to former US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle (Oliver, Matt).

In conclusion, everybody is vertically integrating and trying to catch the viewers into their own service, and if we want to have every single movie and show, we have to pay for every single service. Simply, these services are becoming more profitable for the companies and worse for us.
