Mental Health And Graphic Designer!

Mental health oh!, what is it? Seriously what is it?

Where do you think creative ideas come from huh?

It all comes from above, nope not above the clouds, look little below, again wrong, not from your celling, climb a little down, what do you have in your head? Brain!

This is the Central Hub for all your creative ideas, this is where you mix and match and create new ideas, let’s assume this brain as a Santa Factory which produces beautiful ideas, in order to produce awesome ideas it should be clean, factory should have some free time and also to feed it with enough power to operate machines inside it.

Ok ok I know I’m going too deep and you are starting to get confused, let me make it clear.

Your brain is like a muscle it needs to be trained and it also cannot be used all the time, it also needs some free time, you can’t work all day long, can you? I mean you can, but by the time your energy drains, you’ll be a living dead not even consciously knowing what you are doing.

And working like this is bad for creative people. Who said taking rests are non-productive (I mean If all you do is rest, then you are a lazy sloth, this is not for you, just leave…... But If you are not a lazy sloth and is someone who does some work, you are welcomed to stay!) Taking breaks are essential part of being an effective creative!

If you have trouble coming up with ideas, can’t focus, can’t work to the timeline you said to yourself, don’t worry! You can be and do more than you imagined!

There are 24 hours in a day and we are probably awake 12 to 15 hrs a day, it might vary to person to person, but from the time you are awake your brain starts to collect data from all the sensory organs you have and starts processing it to come up with the best outcome, does this mean the brain sleeps when we sleep? The short answer is no

Your brain is always awake

Our brain in this modern day world is experiencing a information flood where you’ll scroll through one Shorts to another, one Tik Tok to another without even fully grasping what’s in it

If there is something flashy while you scroll, you stop… booty, you stop……a cat singing, you stop…….. satisfying slime, you stop….. or worst case scenario, you’ll keep scrolling until you find something interesting, you went there with no intention, you where there just to stimulate yourself, just to get the short shot of dopamine what will happen after an hour of consumption?

You will feel foggy inside your brain, you’ll be like wtf just happened?

There is an even worst case scenario, where you will pull out your phone for a specific intention but ended up wasting time consuming irrelevant content feeling like somebody or something is controlling your attention.

There are some certain strategies big social media apps and websites has, let’s say Tik Tok if you open up the app, you start to do what? scroll…then again and again and again and again, it seems to never stop, it feels like there is no end to it right? Yes! there is not end in these social media apps or to say in technical terms INFINITE SCROLL, as it says you can scroll infinitely

The next one is the Highs and lows, so you are using Tik Tok for an hour for now and let me ask you a question, Did all the posts you saw was a 10 out 10 funny? Did all the posts were by the same creator?

This is the Highs and lows, If they showed you all 10 out 10 clips then you’ll be, ah I’m done for today or I got satisfied, and If they showed you all boring ass clips, then what will happen? you won’t even open that thing ever again, right? Why? because they only show you boring ass clips
So.. In order make you spend more time in their platform they will show you some 7 out of 10 clips, and then followed by some 2 out of 10 clips, then followed by some 5 out of 7 clips, by doing so you’ll be constantly scrolling to find that 10 out of 10 clips you want!

These are some of the things I felt which people needed to be aware of, once they are aware of it, they’ll reduce the consumption

Some people might say I consume tips and tricks and education content, no you are not don’t lie to yourself, even if you are consuming it might be in the middle while you watch some random ass videos, you didn’t intentionally went there to consume educational content did you?

People might feel actually productive when they consume something educational or useful, but if you don’t use it in real life then what’s the point of consuming it?

You might feel like you are productive in the virtual world, but really you are not being productive in real world. It’s about learning the tricks and using them, not just watching and consuming about them. Once you apply what you learned then you will learn a lot. You can’t design great designs just by watching videos, learning tricks, you have to do the work, you have to take action in order to improve.

So how do we actually maintain a good mental health?

Meditation might seem like a off topic, but hear me out, what meditation does is something amazing which can’t be expressed in words, you can only feel when you do it, and don’t expect to have a great mental health after 1 day of 5 min mediation, it is not how it works, you have to be consistent with it to actually see the results

You will feel like nothing has changed, but you stick with it long enough you will see some major changes, suddenly you’ll feel calm and collective But it will take some time

There is no quick fixes

Did you know that only a few people actually write about their goals and thoughts? Our brain is great at generating ideas not storing it, this is why whenever you are in shower, before you actually fall asleep, while walking, you’ll get awesome ideas and you think to yourself “i wouldn’t forget this idea ever” but you’ll eventually do and this happened for me too.

Getting your thoughts out of your brain and storing it somewhere is some different game, it helps you clear your mind to generate even more ideas and helps you to think clearly. When you put down your thoughts on paper you will get a bird’s eye view of what is actually going on, which helps you steer clearly

I would recommend writing it down on a physical notebook, paper. You can literally feel the difference when you write your thoughts down in a physical paper and notebook, rather than digital

I would say this is a personal preference, I mean exercise is good for all humans right? It helps us stay in good shape, helps in maintaining good health and also to have more effective brain, doing some form of exercise is good for your mind and body too.

We will be siting for all day long, so why do you move a little, huh?

We discussed about this above and how this messes up with your brain, so cutting out social media is something that dramatically changed my life, I mean I still have social media for my business purpose, I don’t go in social media to consume mindless content or for entertainment. I use those to communicate and to share my ideas and to grow my business!

I bet you will see dramatic clarity in your thoughts once you cut out any form of mindless social media consumption

These are some of my takes on improving mental health and these are some of the major things that worked for me hopefully it’ll work for you too!

so……. I’ll leave now see you next ime (oh and I purposedly missed “T” in the last line)

Disclaimer: All I write here is just my personal view on graphic design and designers, and other stuffs too. If you like and get what I’m saying you can follow it, If not just leave it aside no offence.
