On Being 69.

This article was inspired by fellow Medium writer Leonardo Del Toro. His article is a great piece of advice. My mind seems to work OK, except for the sequels of a nasty case of PTSD which robs me of…

Betrayal

When are you at your weakest? I do find mornings particularly weekday mornings when I first awake to be my weakest part of the day. I can have a heaviness on my chest. I notice it is not so heavy on weekends, I wonder why! The thoughts going through my head can be varied they can focus on ‘the crusts’ I have to earn or my state of wellness. I have learned as I have oft repeated here how I eat the elephant one spoon at a time. Living this leads me to share with others who struggle in the mornings. Today one guy told me he ‘took my advice’ and did one thing and then the next thing until he got to where he needed to be. I got that sensation that comes when someone tells you that something you said worked. It is one thing to work for me it ‘blows me away’ when it works for someone else.

Samson has been on my mind. I too have spoken of Samson previously. These characters who I first heard of as a child remain with me. They are not one-off stories they are visitors who keep coming back when needed. Samson is perhaps best known for his strength though no one knew the secret of it.

He fell in love and it was here his strength was most severely tested. Three times Deliah the woman he loved asked him the secret of his strength each time he told her a bogus story. We know it was bogus because she tried it three times and each time he fought off the attackers she had set up to overpower him. I do wonder why Samson did not question Deliah’s loyalty but as they say ‘love is blind’. Finally, through emotional manipulation, he told her the truth. Then time after she cut his hair he was overpowered and taken captive by the enemy.

The Book of Judges does not record whether he was heartbroken but I imagine he was. Here was the woman who he loved betraying him to others. We see the story repeated in the New Testament when Judas betrays his friend Jesus. Was Samson wrong to love the wrong woman was Jesus wrong to befriend a wrong ‘un? Were we? No,we were not the betrayers we were the believers. We believed that our love was true that our friendship was true it was but for the love of money the other cashed us in.

In truth, they cashed themselves in.
