The Return of Fatbeats

A long lost record store opens its doors once again.

Nearly eight long years ago, Fatbeats decided to close it’s New York and Los Angeles stores. It was a sad time for many alike.

It was always a must when I came to visit the city — the only reason I’d even want to go to Melrose aside from the graffiti covered back alleyways.

It’s one of those places you’d go to pick up some new records, see what was new on the scene, and buy tickets to shows around the area. You would even get to meet and chop it up with, who in my eyes were, gods. DJs and producers I looked up to and influenced mein the grandest ways. Fatbeats was nothing short of a Mecca for me.

Fast forward to 2018…

One of the few instances I get sucked into browsing social media, I come across a post/flyer for a grand opening. At first I thought nothing of it. As I flipped my thumb to keep scrolling past I managed to catch a glimpse of what first seemed to be a mirage.

I had to do a double take. My eyes have deceived me before. My eyes nearly watered up. Was this true? Or was it just another one of the many flukes strewn around Instagram?

Not only did I confirm the grand opening was really happening — there laid out was a very insane setlist. Ecstatic could not even begin to describe how I was feeling.

DJs and producers from the likes of Dibiase, Houseshoes, Ras G, J-Rocc, and Exile(among many other greats) showed up and did what they do best — rock the crowd. You know that tingly feeling you get when you hear a dope track? Yeah, that was the entire day.

How could it get any better? Oh I don’t know — maybe just randomly running into other artists you look up to like DJ Numark and Mad Skillz.

All in all, it was just a great experience to be around other like-minded good music heads.
