PBR Cookout

While Missouri Western is only halfway through the fall semester, it has already had quite a line-up of events that have taken place on and off campus. The school has especially turned up a couple of notches for Homecoming Week. For the past week, either one or several events were hosted by various school organizations throughout the week. One of these events was a cookout hosted by the co-ed band/music fraternity Phi Boota Roota (PBR) on October 3rd. It was primarily an invitational cookout to recruit more members for their fraternity.

While there were mostly current and alumni members of the fraternity present, there were some people there who were not a part of the fraternity but came to support them. The event took place at the Res Life Commons Courtyard and had a pretty decent turnout. They grilled hotdogs and hamburgers, had chips and sodas, and conversed with one another. There were also a considerable number of attendees who played frisbee during the cookout.

A vast majority of the event’s attendees were present and were asked about Phi Boota Roota and why they personally joined the music fraternity.

“A lot of people I knew were in it, they seemed like they had a lot of fun doing the activities that they do, and I’m also in percussion [in Missouri Western’s band],” Missouri Western Sophomore and PBR member Lauren Brookman stated.

“What made me join PBR at first was the people at the time,” said Missouri Western Senior and PBR President Joe Ben Martinez. “It was a really welcoming environment and I really appreciated that they seemed like they actually wanted me to join and weren’t just looking for numbers.”

“I wanted to be more involved in things at school alone, and also because I knew some people here [in PBR] also because it’s a co-ed fraternity based on the art of percussion, which is the instrument I play in [Missouri Western’s] band,” Missouri Western Junior and PBR Vice President Paula Villavicencio expressed.

Some of these PBR members also shared what they personally think PBR represents and means to them.

“Personally, it represents family, the love of music, percussion, and I think it just represents passion between all areas pretty much,” Missouri Western Sophomore and PBR Warden Dana Vinson said.

“PBR to me represents family, it represents just the love of music, and the love of percussion arts,” expressed Missouri Western Senior and PBR Historian and Social Media Manager Hannah Owens.
