Journal Entry 1

0/15

Today was the first day of class. Going in I didn’t really know what to expect from the course. Once Dr. Sandridge walked into the class, I was confused as to why he had this huge walking stick. When he spoke to the class he went over basically what the class was about. He stated that this course would be about leaders and how to develop into a leader. From there he went on to explain the walking stick. He stated that most good leaders have a walking stick. Immediately what came to my mind was shepherds and how they walk with a staff or in this case it would be considered a walking stick.

From that point we went on to talk about what makes a person a leader. He gave us the task of coming up with 5 things that leaders do and 5 things that non-leaders do.

01/16

Today is my out of class work day. I have to come up with 5 things that a leader does and 5 things that non-leaders do.

Leaders:

Non-Leaders

01/17

Today in class we went over the list that we came up with for good and bad leaders, but before we jumped into that we went over emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is broken down into 4 different categories. The different categories are perspective taking, empathy, self awareness, and self regulation.

We Then began to talk about the qualities. The good had an extensive list with some being they set goals, collaborate, embrace change, and keep promises. The bad list was rather short. It was a lot more hard to think of qualities that a bad leader posses. The ones we came up with were, they act of impulse, they resist criticism, they resent dissent, they focus on their own needs, and they ignore the blind spots.

Overall this class session was cool to see what we all think the qualities of a good leader should be.

Assignment Two
Now consider more carefully the role of the mentor (answer these questions in your journal):
1. What is a mentor? In particular, what is the difference between a mentor and each of these other figures in society who try to make us better at something: a teacher, a coach, a role model, a sponsor, and a trainer.

A mentor is a person who there for a specific persons needs and will always be there to encourage them, where as these other people are there for one specific job
2. Have you had a mentor before? What did he/she do that qualified as mentoring?

I have and they were there for me through everything. They encouraged me through different journeys I have been on.

3. How does someone find a mentor? How does someone become ready for a mentor?

I feel like in order to find a mentor you must seek one, but anyone can be a mentor.

Today in class we went over survey questions. We really just went through each question one by one and answered it fully.

01/23

Today was an out of class workday. Being that i didn’t have classes early this morning, I decided to read the book The Odyssey. I also answered the questions which follow.
