I’ve struggled with a serious inability to fall asleep since I was a kid. When I look back over my life, I have memories even as a very young child of lying awake late at night wishing I could just fall asleep like other people do.

I work as a freelance writer. While researching an article, I stumbled on an interesting biological fact and theory about body temperature and sleep.

I thought back over the times during the hot California summers when it seemed impossible to fall asleep. Was that because my body wasn’t able to cool off enough?

My mind was blown by this idea and I wondered if that meant purposely dropping my body temperature while trying to fall asleep would trigger sleep?

The answer? Yes! Why, yes it does!

I sleep with a fan for white noise. When I can’t fall asleep, I simply pull back the covers and lay on the bed with only my feet covered to keep them from getting cold.

At first, I feel chilled but soon that feeling wanes.

I lay there in a comfortable sleeping position until I once again start to feel chilled. It typically takes about five to ten minutes. The return to feeling chilled is my signal my body temperature has dropped enough for sleep.

At this point, I pile the covers back on and with a shocking success rate of about 90% — I quickly fall asleep! And, the best thing about this insomnia treatment is that if it doesn’t work the first time — strip back the covers and try again and the second time will work.
