part I

Beep! Beep! Beep! And Luke Bryan’s seductive voice reverberate from her cell and echos through the bedroom at 5am. Just like that, the serene dreams of days wished for and days gone by melt into a blurred reality. Irene repeatedly hits snooze, desperately wanting just eight more minutes of bliss before her feet hit the floor preparing for a shift at the long term care nursing center. She’s been doing the same thing every morning for almost 13 years now.

Irene’s hair has been in the “growing out” stage for years. At least that’s what she tells herself. In reality it’s has always had a mind of its own, curling and waving this way and that, doing the twirling tango in the wee hours of the night. As she brushes her teeth ,she does what she does every morning, scrutinizes it’s wildly ways and tells herself “time to get this mop cut” as she piles the champagne spirals into some semblance of a messy bun onto the top of her head.

5:23am. Shit! She’s gonna be late. One quick coat of noir mascara and its time to go. No need to give the boss something else to bitch about.
